Bishop, I totally agree. I have a $150 Panasonic Lumix that I've taken great portraits with, but I love my DSLR and the ability to change almost every aspect of a photo right at my finger tips.

I agree with bubu1uk - A DSLR doesn't make you a good photographer. I have a basic Canon 350D ( cheap DSLR ) and it does take great pictures, but you have to know about photography first. I can take great shots on a point and shoot, just because I know a bit about photography and have taken some courses.
You can take crappy shots with a DSLR, or great shots - depends on your skill level.
But you can use Aperture and Lightroom even if you don't own a DSLR. Lightroom is great, nice and lightweight.
